THAT'S IT, IT'S ALL GONE !!
The pub has gone ! the last piece of the jigsaw leading to the building of a new Lidl.
this is the third pub to be built on this site dating back to early 1930s
The land was donated to the council on condition there would always be a public house on the site, I wonder if this will still apply today ?

Opened by Tony Blackburn in 1964 The Kingstanding Circle shopping centre holds many memories for many people. But with no investment for 60 years it's time to go. Change is good. Please note, I am not sponsored by Lidl in any way, I have approached them for some form of sponsorship, as I am basically advertising for them for free, but they have not got back to me as yet, I doubt if they will.

The demolition is about 2/3 complete, I think they will leave the remains of the pub till last as it's acting as a wall at the moment. It's moving quite fast now so stay tuned... I think the story that they had pulled out is just a 'Lidl' rumour ..

Outside of a few handsome buildings in the city centre, Birmingham is full of brutal, ugly vistas. The Birmingham band Godflesh released their debut album a year after this film, and I can see why they sounded like they did.

It looks a bit rundown back then with all the concrete buildings but I am sure the people are lot better than what we see today in every city in the uk today. I visited Birmingham a lot in the late 1990s and the place looked like it had improved quite a lot. I found the people in Brum to be down to earth friendly like a lot of the West Midlands. Like all cities in the UK it has loads of money spent on cosmetically improving whilst they have torn the heart out of it.

I used to go to that shopping centre with my parents growing up. I think it's ashame they demolish these places just to to open up another Lidl/Aldi, there's so many of these around yet more and more are getting built. I know it was old, but I think it would be better if the councils just let the empty shops for free at these type of places, get small retailers selling a variety of different things with discounted vat on the goods so it encourages people to shop in person rather then online. I think it would be better to have a variety of different shops like that rather then the same old Lidl/Aldi/Asda etc.

My mother used to work in the 'Standing as a cleaner, but it was the previous one with the veranda and the two 'paintings' inside, one of Charles I and one of the battle of Culloden. Many years later I lived close to the Culloden battlefield, how about that for full Circle. By the time I was old enough to legally get into a pub I avoided the 'Standing as it was a bit of a hole and went down to the Parson and Clerk. I suppose all things must change, we've just lost the petrol station in my village, turning into a Morrisons (might have a petrol pump) but looking at your footage of the shopping center before it was pulled down made me nostalgic. Brutalist architecture is fast disappearing across Britain and although I hated it at the time I've got a soft spot for it now; rose tinted glasses and dimming eyesight 👓 🥲

I have never been able to figure out how anyone can afford to tear down a massive structure, remove the debris and rebuild. What a cost? Amazing. Not being negative. I truly wish I understood how they can do it. Thanks for the video.

I was born in 1964 , and one of those was our family car , similar colour, not 2 tone , we lived in a city with very steep streets, and Dad had to use routes that were the least steep possible, otherwise it would boil over . He regularly had to get the valves ground , it was definitely less than ideal .In 1969 ish he sold it and bought a 1966 Chrysler Valiant and that was our family car until 1980 , then he bought a newer Valiant. Getting the Valiant was like going from the Flintstones to the Jetsons , what a huge upgrade it was . But, I'd love to have that "Defect " now ,for sentimental reasons, but, it sure wouldn't be my daily driver. 🙂
